Nelly 2021 Tour Announcement – Lil Bit of Music Tour Schedule
This fall, Nelly is continuing his “Lil Bit of Music” concert series, featuring the veteran rapper alongside country artist Jimmie Allen. You can next see Nelly on October 29th-31st at Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco, CA, while performances continue through January 2022.
Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr, is one of the most famous rappers of all time. That being said, he’s been rolling with the world’s most prominent country music artists since he resumed performing in summer 2021. In August, he rapped alongside Florida Georgia Line and Thomas Rhett at the Feeding Nashville music festival… while playing next to Miranda Lambert and Luke Combs at Rock the South the following week.
This context is necessary to understand Nelly’s “Lil Bit of Music” concert series that began in the fall. It’s marketed as a “first-of-its-kind experience” that “showcases the on-stage fusion of country, hip hop, rap, and R&B with a distinctly ‘rock n’ roll’ presentation.” In simpler terms, it features Nelly’s hip-hop hits that dominated the 2000s, like “Grillz” and “Hot in Here,” along with opening acts that span all genres.
Of course, there are also Nelly’s country roots that one can’t ignore. 2020 marked the 20th anniversary of his debut album, Country Grammar, which combined pop and rap with Midwest hip-hop that hails from his Austin, TX, hometown. Named number 85 on Billboard’s list of the 200 Greatest Albums of All Time, this record established Nelly as one of the greatest rappers of the 2000s while celebrating his subtle country roots.
However, the 46-year-old was a bit less subtle with the release of his eighth album, 2021’s Heartland. His first album since 2013 took a country rap turn that turned heads from fans of both genres – featuring appearances by country heroes like Darius Rucker, Kane Brown, and Jimmie Allen. The current Nelly tour is named for the single “Lil Bit” featuring Florida Georgia Line, who he has also performed alongside in the past!
While the fusion of country and rap is more common today, Nelly took a significant risk when combining the two genres over twenty years ago. It worked out in his favor, establishing him as one of the greatest artists of the decade with a musical style all his own.
