Dropkick Murphys 2023 Tour Announcement – St. Patrick’s Day Tour Schedule
Dropkick Murphys have announced a St. Patrick’s Day tour for 2023! The Celtic punk band will kick off on March 1st in Charlotte, NC, and make 12 stops before concluding with four nights in their hometown of Boston, MA.
Dropkick Murphys have long been associated with St. Patrick’s Day, courtesy of their Celtic punk roots that have let them tour not just in Ireland but worldwide! This time, they’re bringing classic songs like “Rose Tattoo,” “The Green Fields of France,” and “The Boys Are Back” to the US… guitar, accordion, and all. Ken Casey and his bandmates may hail from Massachusetts and have the accents to prove it, but you’d 100% believe that they’re from Dublin when seeing a Dropkick Murphys concert. And the Irish vibes will only be amplified as they tour in March 2022.
Of course, it’s not just the beloved Irish holiday that they’ll be celebrating on the Dropkick Murphys tour, but also their eleventh album, This Machine Still Kills Fascists, released in September 2022. Featuring new songs like “Ten Times More,” “All You Fonies,” and “Two 6’s Upside Down,” it’s a peak punk rock record that, simply put, tells it like it is and makes no apologies for it. This brutal honesty has been a thing for Dropkick Murphys since they formed in the late 1990s, and they don’t plan to stop anytime soon.
The album name is inspired by the late folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, who sported a “this machine kills fascists” sticker on his guitar. Dropkick Murphys frontman Ken Casey admits that much of the music on his band’s new album is based around unpublished Guthrie lyrics, with his family’s blessing, as he’s been inspired by Woody Guthrie since childhood.
“I had to wear special white gloves in this temperature-controlled room, and I got to hold actual piece of papers that the songs were written on,” Casey said in an interview about reading Guthrie’s archives. “I’m telling you, I’ve been to the Louvre, and I’ve seen The Mona Lisa and all that, but those pages were alive. He dated every page and would oftentimes write where he was in America; it was amazing to see how much of the country he saw.” “He was writing with first-hand knowledge in a lot of these instances,” he continued, “We took a couple of lyrics and recorded a few of them back in the day, one of them, of course, being ‘I’m Shipping Up To Boston’.”
“I’m Shipping Up to Boston” was released over fifteen years ago, if that gives you any indication of how long Dropkick Murphys has been obsessed with Woody Guthrie! They did true justice to the folk singer on their latest album and can’t wait to perform these new songs on their St. Patrick’s Day tour, creating the perfect mix between Guthrie’s and Dropkick Murphys’ aesthetics that any fan will enjoy.
