Death Cab for Cutie is set to perform near you on the Asphalt Meadows tour, with dozens of dates across the US. The emo outfit will kick off the trek on July 7th in Newport, KY, and continue through October 27th in Seattle, WA.
Death Cab for Cutie is releasing their tenth and long-awaited studio album, Asphalt Meadows, later in 2022. Not only is it their first record in four years, but it’s also one of their most personal musical pieces yet. It’s a lot to say for a band commonly referred to as emo pioneers, but don’t underestimate the power that a global pandemic and years-long hiatus can have on these Death Cab for Cutie songs.
They’ve already released one single, “Roman Candles,” which is a bit morbid and really catchy. You know, in genuine Death Cab for Cutie fashion. The song is about “the crippling, existential dread that goes hand in hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet,” says singer Ben Gibbard. “And that the only way to be in the moment is to let it all go.”
“The lyrics were cobbled from a couple of different songs dealing with my general sense of anxiety,” he added, referencing “the feeling that the fabric that weaves a functioning society together was crumbling during the pandemic.” Is it a dark theme for the upbeat track? Yes. Is it also accurate and relatable? Absolutely.
