The Lion King, The Musical in Theater – 2021-2022 Tour Schedule
Before all the 90’s Disney classics were being made into live-action films, they were transformed into breathtaking stage adaptations, with The Lion King being the show that started it all. The musical will return to Broadway on September 14th and tours in other cities like Nashville, TN; Oklahoma City, OK; Cleveland, OH; San Antonio, TX; and more.
In the twenty-four years since The Lion King premiered in New York City in 1997, it has become the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time. People worldwide pay a visit to Minskoff Theatre to see the tale about Simba and his journey to becoming the king of Pride Rock, and it’s easy to see why.
Between the iconic musical numbers featuring tracks from Elton John, intricate stage makeup and animal puppets, and a rich storyline that delivers hints of childhood nostalgia, The Lion King is simply a timeless classic.
Most know the story of one of Disney’s most iconic films. The Lion King centers around Simba, a young lion cub destined to become king of his pride. That is, until his father Mufasa’s gruesome death at the hands of his jealous brother, Scar. Simba is tricked into believing that he killed his father and ran away from Pride Rock to be adopted by a warthog and meerkat — Timone and Pumba.
As he grows older, Simba finally realizes his true destiny and seeks to avenge his father’s death and take the crown. The animated version is a classic for 90s kids everywhere, while the 2019 version gave us voice work from Childish Gambino, Beyonce, Seth Rogen, and more as they sang the songs of our childhood.
While you likely watched both of these films during quarantine in 2020, The Lion King is ready to take its rightful place back on Broadway… or to a city near you. This show set the stage (pun intended) for other Disney musicals like Frozen and Beauty and the Beast, and it’s a must-see for any theater fan.
