My Fair Lady, The Musical in Theater, 2021-2022 Performance Schedule
What makes a lady? It’s a question that’s a bit outdated in 2021 but was highly prevalent a few decades back. So prevalent that they decided to make an entire musical out of it! My Fair Lady became an instant Broadway classic when it premiered in New York City in 1956 and has remained a staple for the past half-century. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion, this tale of Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle is a musical phenomenon that you need to see.
My Fair Lady once set the record for the longest-running show on Broadway, which was quite the achievement for its time! This later turned into an Academy-Award-winning film starring Audrey Hepburn, released in 1964, which helped My Fair Lady become a franchise and household name. While it hasn’t been on the Great White Way in some time, you can still see the show in many cities. These include San Francisco, CA, Tempe, AZ, Buffalo, NY, St. Louis, MO, and more.
Taking place in Edwardian London, My Fairy Lady centers on a Cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle. Her thick accent and unusual dialogue catch the attention of phonetician Professor Henry Higgins – and not in a good way. She eventually approaches him for help with her language skills to secure a job, while he bets a colleague that he’ll transform Eliza into a “proper” lady within just six months.
What ensues is a series of lessons, filled with both linguistic gems and obvious “mansplaining” that will definitely make the audience roll their eyes in 2021. Even in the 1950s, My Fair Lady made no secret of Higgin’s misogyny, displaying a musical ahead of its time. The show centers around the journey of self-discovery for not only Eliza Doolittle but also Professor Higgins.
This journey includes plenty of flawless musical numbers you may have heard. These include “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Lovely,” all of which were originally sung by British film and theater legend Julie Andrews. She may have originated the role of Eliza Doolittle, but many extremely talented actresses have stepped into her thick-accented shoes over the decades… and you don’t want to miss the chance to see a lady like Ms. Doolittle in your city.
