MJ: The Musical in Theater, 2022 Performance Schedule
Michael Jackson was many things. Immensely talented, a pop culture phenomenon, and one of the greatest performers of all time… just to name a few. But one of the best words to describe the King of Pop was imaginative. His dreamy melodies and revolutionary music videos transformed the musical landscape, and this is why it’s no surprise that the primary set design for the new biographical musical MJ is straight out of the late pop star’s mind. We’re talking about a fantasy mix of Tokyo and New York City complete with fire escapes, neon signs, and the spotlight that Michael Jackson lived in for his entire life.
MJ: The Musical was initially set to open in summer 2020, before it was delayed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show finally made its way to New York City in December 2021, and has found its new home at the Neil Simon Theatre. You can now catch MJ: The Musical on Broadway through the end of the year!
The timeline is set during Jackson’s rehearsals for the 1992 Dangerous tour – typically considered to be the height of his fame – with cuts to childhood flashbacks and memories of his rise to stardom. With a career spanning over four decades, there’s no telling how much of Jackson’s life the musical will cover… the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.
Jackson has only gotten more famous since his death in 2009. Sometimes it’s for good reasons like posthumous singles and awards, and other times it’s tragic documentaries. MJ was a public figure in every sense of the term, with the world watching his every move since he was an adorable kid in The Jackson 5… and everybody has an opinion on the man in the mirror.
You’ve probably seen the iconic zombie match that was the “Thriller” music video. If anything, you’ve seen that shot of MJ eating popcorn during the video that’s total meme material. But Jackson has dozens of other hit singles that will play out in MJ along with his legendary dance moves. “Billie Jean,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Black and White,” “Bad,”…. You know, all the tunes that casually transformed the pop scene for years to come. The actor playing Michael Jackson has big shoes to fill, and here’s hoping he can mookwalk in them.
