Mean Girls, The Musical in Theater – 2021-2022 Performance Schedule
Regina George is a lot of things. Popular. Glamorous. Mean. But you’ve likely never heard the character described as an “Apex Predator” until now. Mean Girls has been a cult film for almost two decades and has expanded its influence to include a hit musical! Mean Girls: The Musical opened on Broadway in 2018 and featured all the iconic quotes from the film and a few Instagram references to match the era.
While it was announced that Mean Girls would not return to Broadway after the pandemic, there are still plenty of chances to see the show! It’s making its way to cities like Tempe, AZ, Portland, OR, Spokane, WA, Salt Lake City, UT, and many more through 2023.
You may already know the story. It begins when 16-year old Cady Heron moves to a Chicago suburb with her parents after living in Africa and being homeschooled her entire life. While she initially fails to make any new friends on her first day of public school, she soon meets the feisty Janis and her “too gay to function” best friend, Damian.
From there, she’s invited to eat lunch with the Plastics – the most popular group in school consisting of “Queen Bee” Regina George, her right hand Gretchen Weiners and dumb blonde Karen Smith. Janis convinces her to hang out with the group and play double agent. Still, things get complicated when Cady falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, discovers the power of popularity, and begins to lose herself in the process.
You likely know at least a few iconic Mean Girls lines. “You go, Glen Coco!” “So fetch!” “I’m a mouse, duh!” Most of the classics from the film make their way into the musical, with a few more modern references. The entire show is laced with commentary about Instagram, social media, likes, and internet culture… which didn’t even exist when the film was released in 2004.
And then there are funny political references that remind you that Tina Fey wrote this show. Mean Girls follows the film closely enough to give you a significant rush of nostalgia without making it seem like you’re just watching a movie that you can’t rewind. It’s the biggest compliment we can give any musical based on a film!
Songs like “Apex Predator,” “What’s Wrong With Me,” and “I’d Rather Be Me” are flawlessly sung as gigantic video screens change scenery behind the actors – making it easier to pay attention to the show without the distraction of moving props. It’s modern but still gives you the 2004 vibes that you love from Mean Girls… making this musical a must-see for people of all ages.
