Jagged Little Pill, The Musical in Theater – 2021-2022 Performance Schedule
There’s no denying that the 1990s were a great time, and Alanis Morissette was something of an icon throughout the decade. Particularly due to her album, Jagged Little Pill, which was the angsty set of rock songs every teen was brooding over and every parent secretly loved. Even if you’re a younger millennial or Gen Z’er who wasn’t around for such a glorious time, you can now see Jagged Little Pill: The Musical come to life 25 years later onstage.
Jagged Little Pill opened in New York City’s Broadhurst Theatre in December 2019, mere months before the world shut down and Broadway went dark. Despite only taking the stage for a short time, the great reviews poured in as these singers portrayed a glorious, onstage musical adaption of the most famous Alanis Morissette album.
People have been flocking to the big city to see Jagged Little Pill since it reopened in late October, and you’ll definitely want tickets for the Tony-nominated show.
Just like the Grammy-winning album that it’s named for, Jagged Little Pill is a show about pain, healing, and empowerment. It begins as Connecticut mother Mary Jane (or MJ) writes her yearly Christmas letter in which she brags about her family’s accomplishments, like her son Nick’s acceptance into Harvard and her daughter Frankie’s beautiful art.
However, she leaves out the fact that her life has become a suburban nightmare. MJ has become addicted to prescription medication while her marriage crumbles, her daughter begins to resent her, and she places an obscene amount of pressure on her son to keep the family’s good reputation intact. As the plot progresses, it explores controversial themes such as substance abuse, mental health, gender identity, and sexual assault.
Fair warning: the plot can get intense, with graphic storylines of sexual assault at a high school party, a back-alley drug deal, an addiction to pornography, and more. The show is eerily similar to the hit show 13 Reasons Why and may be hard to watch at times, but ultimately necessary to understand the unseen struggles people go through every day.
As expected, most of the songs in Jagged Little Pill are from the album it’s based upon. The best scene is when the hit song “Ironic,” is called out for its lyrics that aren’t actually ironic at all, just bad luck… a debate people have had for two decades. Then there’s “All I Really Want,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “Perfect,” and “You Learn,” a series of songs that will send Gen X’ers in the audience into a frenzy of sing-alongs and nostalgia.
But then there’s also a handful of new songs that remind you what a rock musical is really about. Bring your parents and enjoy the show that The New York Times called “very much of the present, and the most woke musical since Hair.”
Jagged Little Pill is a solid rock musical that has something for everybody… whether you were the angsty teen singing along in your room when Jagged Little Pill was released, or are just hearing the songs for the first time and relate to them on a modern, magical level.
