Hadestown, The Musical in Theater – 2021-2023 Performance Schedule
Who didn’t like learning about Greek mythology in English class? These legends were fun, informative, and most importantly… showed us that even gods and goddesses can seriously mess up too. Hadestown is no exception. The musical combines two mythic tales to take you on a journey to hell and back – all while serenading you with New Orleans style jazz and sultry moves. Truly, if the Hadestown setting is considered the underworld … it’s not too bad down here.
Hadestown has made its way back to Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City, and is also playing around the country. You can see the show in Los Angeles, CA, Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IL, Tucson, AZ, and many other cities into late 2022!
Hadestown at its core is ultimately a story about relationships. The narrator Hermes tells the tale of Orpheus, a handsome musician and poet, and his love for Eurydice – who likes Orpheus, but is not as committed to him as he would like. And then there’s Hades, the god of the underworld, and Persephone, his reluctant wife who is being held in the underworld against her will.
She is allowed to spend a certain amount of time on Earth each year, and further problems arise when Hades brings her back to his underground factory before his time is up. These two love-hate relationships interwine onstage to create a heavenly dynamic that reminds us that Greek gods may not be human, but they sure have plenty of relationship issues.
Greek mythology enthusiasts will be (ironically) in heaven all through Hadestown. The characters from your favorite books come to life onstage, surrounded by soulful singers, blaring trumpets, and steampunk outfits. The tales from the musical follow the original legends quite closely, with just a few minor changes that are far from a Greek tragedy.
As Hadestown was inspired by Anaïs Mitchell’s 2010 concept album of the same name, it’s no surprise that the musical score is full of jazz and folk elements. The underworld is often a big party, with blaring trumpets and flamboyant flair that wouldn’t be out of place in New Orleans.
Just listen to “Way Down Hadestown” or “Livin’ it Up on Top.” But there’s also folk elements in “Why We Build the Wall” and beautiful ballads like “All I’ve Ever Known.” Really, what musical would be complete without at least one couple duet? No matter your musical style, you’re sure to have a hell of a good time in Hadestown. Check the performance schedule below and get your Hadestown tickets now!
