While these women never had a chance to tell their story, Six the Musical does it for them.
Six has gained international attention since premiering at Cambridge University in the UK in 2017. After a successful run in London’s West End, it’s finally made its way to Broadway! The show puts a modern twist on a classic history lesson, producing a flawless musical that’s a fusion of Hamilton, The X Factor, and girls’ night gossip about your ex.
This musical puts all six of Henry’s wives into the role of pop stars in a girl group, each battling it out for the spot of lead singer based on who Henry tortured the most. Yes, you read that correctly. Each woman has a story that can’t be found in even the most thorough history books, and sing their woes throughout this 80-minute show.
Which of Henry VIII’s wives were treated the worst? That’s up to you to decide. He divorced one Catherine and beheaded another, Jane Seymour died of natural causes, Anne Boleyn was publicly humiliated and executed, and even the Catherine that survived was forced to deal with Henry’s drinking and infidelity.
The other thing that the wives all have in common, besides their misunderstood monarch husband? Gorgeous voices that take on modern and catchy pop tunes – reminiscent of Adele, Ariana Grande, and Rihanna and showing no sign that these women lived hundreds of years ago. They even parody Tinder and speak of writing their own “happily ever after” rather than accepting their tragic fates!
