Dear Evan Hansen, The Musical in Theater – 2021-2022 Performance Schedule
Dear charming reader, today is going to be a great day, and here’s why… Dear Evan Hansen exists, and it’s playing all across the country. There’s no musical today more modern and relatable, depicting the heartbreaking reality of mental health, the bittersweet impact of social media, and the eternal struggles of high school. The heavy subject matter accompanied by ultra-catchy pop-rock show tunes will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
Dear Evan Hansen returns to Broadway on December 11th and is also playing in many other cities across the country. You can see the show in Fort Worth, TX, Greensboro, NC, Omaha, NE, Jacksonville, FL, and more!
Evan Hansen is simply a fictional version of somebody we all know – an incredibly lonely teenager with crippling social anxiety, stumbling over his words and filling with dread at the thought of the slightest social interaction. You know all those memes about being grateful for Postmates, as social anxiety prevents you from talking to the pizza guy? That’s Evan.
He has very few friends, a strained relationship with his single mother, and the inability to vibe with his peers – especially Zoey Murphy, his longtime crush. The story truly begins with an encounter between Evan and Zoey’s brother Connor.
Evan’s therapist advises him to write encouraging letters to himself to boost his confidence. Unfortunately, one of them gets into the hands of Connor Murphy, a known bully who takes his own life shortly after this encounter. Upon finding the letter, Connor’s parents assume their son genuinely wrote it to Evan and that the two were good friends. Evan carries on this lie throughout the show, developing a loving relationship with the Murphys and becoming a social media icon after his tribute to Connor goes viral on social media – all while struggling with the guilt of this facade.
From the second Evan steps onstage, it’s hard not to see yourself in him or somebody else you know. He’s a symbol of the loneliness and fear that lives in all of us… right down to the scrolling through your crush’s Instagram feed while feeling like you’re “on the outside always looking in.”
The show has a profound emotional impact on millions of “Fansens” worldwide suffering from social anxiety, suicide loss, and the feeling that you’re not good enough… making it the musical of a generation. The show was recently made into a film adaptation released in September 2021, starring Broadway’s original Evan Hansen, Ben Platt, in the titular role.
The breathtaking score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, including songs like “Waving Through a Window,” “Only Us,” and “Words Fail,” has become a Broadway favorite since the show premiered on Broadway in 2016. And once you’ve seen the movie, it becomes even more clear that you need to see Evan onstage in his iconic blue polo. Check the schedule below and get your Dear Evan Hansen tickets today!
