Bad Cinderella on Broadway – 2023 Performance Schedule
Cinderella is a classic fairytale that’s been remade hundreds of times in the pop culture landscape, but trust us; you’ve never seen it quite like this! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella is now on Broadway, a breathtaking and bold rewrite of the beloved story that will make you laugh, cry, and cringe. But only in the best way, okay?
Now playing at the Imperial Theatre in New York City, there are a few things you should know about Bad Cinderella. For one, it got rave reviews in London’s West End, serving as the backdrop for a tale as old as time with a modern twist. Another thing is that the music was written by theater legend Andrew Lloyd Webber, who penned iconic hits like “All I Ask Of You” from The Phantom of the Opera and “Memory” from Cats. Need we say more?
But before we get into the music, let’s talk about the plot of Bad Cinderella. It’s set in the fictional town of BelleVille, which is known for its beautiful people and fairytale vibes. However, the village people are more than a bit bummed out this year due to the death of Prince Charming. After he loses his battle with a dragon, they decide to carve out a statue of the royal to honor his memory. However, this gets a bit complicated after the monument is vandalized by Cinderella.
You see, in this universe, she isn’t exactly the same sweet and soft-spoken princess you know from the Disney film. Instead, Cinderella is a sharp talker who’s looked down upon by BelleVille and has always had trouble fitting in. Except for Charming’s younger brother, Sebastian, who enjoys her company but is also too busy with his own problems to deal with her drama. He is heir to an entire kingdom now, after all, and needs to find a bride to take the throne. Do you see where this is going?
What ensues is a lewd and lovingly hilarious take on the fairytale you know and love. Expect more than a few storyline twists and turns that you didn’t see coming, plus magical music numbers from Mr. Webber himself! These include “Buns ‘n’ Roses,” “Only You, Lonely You,” “Beauty Has a Price,” and over a dozen more, culminating a tale of romance, fairytales, and finding yourself.
