Aladdin, in Theater – 2022 Performance Schedule
Aladdin is a beloved story you may have heard before. A street rat meets a princess, finds a magic lamp, pretends to be a prince and becomes the ultimate poster boy for rags to riches. And then there’s that famous magic carpet ride – which looks just as spectacular above your theater seat as it does the kingdom of Agrabah. Aladdin is one of the most beloved Disney films of all time, telling the tale of a poor boy whose life turns upside down (literally) when he gets trapped in the Cave of Wonders and comes across a wise-cracking but imprisoned genie. If you thought the film was magical, just wait until you see the hit musical… a magical experience that literally transports you to “A Whole New World.”
Aladdin is playing at New York City’s New Amsterdam Theatre all through 2022, the place it’s called home since 2014. The show has toured worldwide in the past decade, from Seattle, WA, and Los Angeles, CA, to across the pond in London’s West End. However, millions of people still visit Broadway to see the Disney classic in 2022, and you simply need to join them!
To all the 90s kids in the audience, the Aladdin musical follows the film pretty closely. It has all the sequined costumes, action-packed sequences, and original songs that you grew up singing around the house, plus a few new tunes. “A Million Miles Away” is a sweet duet between Aladdin and Jasmine that’s a bit of a precursor to “A Whole New World,” singing about leaving everything behind and running away from their troubled existence.
Meanwhile, “Proud of Your Boy” tugs at your heartstrings and gives substance to Aladdin’s character that you never saw in the animated version. Oh, and then there’s “High Adventure,” the fun song by Aladdin’s three street rat buddies about storming the palace and rescuing him from the evil Jafar.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Aladdin without the Genie. He may be a little less blue, and he’ll never be the great Robin Williams, but the character still steals the show with his witty pop culture references and playful shade towards Aladdin. Without giving away any spoilers, Aladdin definitely did the Genie dirty a few times. It’s even more impressive that the Genie is able to sing, dance, and walk down a bunch of steps in the nearly 10-minute long “Friend Like Me” sequence. It’s the perfect sendoff before intermission, with all the flashiness of the film scene… just a lot more up close and personal.
Try not to get stuck in the bathroom line during intermission, because it’s not long after returning to your seat that you’ll see Aladdin’s most iconic scene – the two lovebirds singing “A Whole New World” on a magic carpet ride. There’s been plenty of debate over where 2019’s live action film lived up to the original, but the experience of live theater is unlike anything you could imagine.
You’ll be laughing, crying and taking in every bit of the 90s nostalgia with Aladdin, a spectacular Broadway show that brings the Disney magic to life. Get your Aladdin tickets now!
