Described as a “re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic,” this Christmas-themed spectacle features a troupe of super-talented dancers, singers, and musicians, including a DJ and violinist. And then there’s the opening set by MC Kurtis Blow – one of the founding fathers of hip-hop!
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s show, The Nutcracker, has been a holiday staple for over a hundred years. However, the hip-hop rendition is rapidly gaining popularity with every generation. It’s playing in many of the top cities across the US, including Newark, NJ; Charlotte, NC; Worcester, MA; New Haven, CT; and more throughout 2022! And for those who can’t make it, they can now watch A Hip-Hop Nutcracker on Disney+, taking them to a new type of winter wonderland. We’re talking about one where the dancers wear tennis shoes instead of tutus and breakdance instead of ballet as they fight the evil Mouse King, and it’s seriously everything.
“I remember the first time I witnessed these incredible dancers, the B-boy, and B-girl dream team,” says MC Kurtis Blow, “I saw them rehearsing and I had to be a part of it.” “I saw these girls and guys getting down, dancing to classical music and hip-hop beats under the music of Tchaikovsky,” he continued, “I was amazed to hear the fusion of classical and hip-hop. I had to be a part of it, and that’s why I’m here.” Blow brings an incredible presence and performance to A Hip-Hop Nutcracker, but so does the rest of the troupe! They’re able to make a holiday classic their own through hip-hop while maintaining the original’s magic, and it’s no easy feat.
