A Christmas Carol in Theater – 2021 Performance Schedule
One of the most legendary plays of the holiday season is back in town, and now is the time to see A Christmas Carol. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ 1843 masterpiece and intertwined with a seasonal score by Alan Menken, also known as the genius behind your favorite Disney films, this play delivers a piece of history along with crucial holiday lessons.
A Christmas Carol started as a musical in New York City nearly three decades ago, playing in Madison Square Garden’s Paramount Theater every Christmas from 1994 through 2003. While this tradition halted when the theatre shut down, this seasonal spectacular still makes regular appearances in the Big Apple around the holidays, along with many other locations!
Currently playing in Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, Worcester, MA, and dozens of other cities… there’s an excellent chance that A Christmas Carol is coming to your town. The timeless classic comes to life with Disney-approved lyrics and messages of hope – something that we all need around the holidays.
Before there was the Grinch, there was Ebenezer Scrooge. The protagonist of the Charles Dickens novel is a selfish and unkind man who despises all Christmas traditions, saying “Bah Humbug!” to garlands and goodwill. As his behavior begins to have a devastating effect on society, Scrooge is visited by supernatural forces that attempt to reverse his selfishness and help him rediscover the meaning of Christmas.
Scrooge’s old business partner Jacob Marley makes the first ghostly appearance, clad in chains that punish him for his selfish acts on Earth. In the song “Link By Link,” he details how he kept the poor away by stacking coins, only for a different type of metal to ironically hold him hostage in the afterlife. Scrooge is unamused, but Marley is only the beginning of his intense night.
He’s visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, and it just gets spookier with each spirit. Even the most magical tunes by Alan Menken can’t drown out the fear of being forgotten or, worse, celebrated once you’re gone, and Scrooge soon realizes the error of his ways and lack of appreciation for the holidays.
The lessons of generosity, selflessness and familial love are things that still hold up even almost two centuries later, making A Christmas Carol a must-see for holiday magic. Fair warning: it can get a bit scary for the little kids, but it’s still a family affair that you can easily make your new holiday tradition!
