The Flaming Lips are back with their second tour in just a few months! The psychedelic rock band is celebrating 20 years of their tenth album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which will be a joyous occasion for both old and new fans. They’ll kick off these performances on May 5th in Chicago, IL, continuing through August 25th in Bonner, MT.
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots quickly became one of the most famous albums by The Flaming Lips when it was released in 2002, and for a good reason. Songs like “Do You Realize?” “Fight Test” and “Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell” only enhanced the group’s signature psychedelic rock sound! The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne understands the significance of his band’s tenth album, although he’s still quite humble about it. In a recent interview with mxdwn.com, he opened up about how Yoshimi is a “landmark record” that helps to define the group’s style. “Well, you know, the song “Do You Realize?” sort of leads the way with everything that happens with The Flaming Lips,” he told the publication, “It’s little by little.” “I think if you know that song that’s what leads you to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and then that leads you to like, “Oh! That’s The Flaming Lips that do that!” Which I think is what musicians want, you know?”
“And the Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots record, along with the record that came out before it, The Soft Bulletin, they’ve become such landmark records for us and our fans,” he continues. “Those records, we’ve never really left them. There are times, I think, when we try to forget about everything that we’ve done, and you just try to make new music that has nothing to do with who you were and all that sort of stuff.” “But those records, every night we play, a third of the songs are from The Soft Bulletin, and a third of the songs are from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Most of the audience is there because of the song “Do You Realize?”
