Porcupine Tree 2022 Tour Announcement – US Tour Schedule
Porcupine Tree has announced their first tour in 12 years, and it’s the best time to see “the most important band you’d never heard of.” The prog-rock trio will begin performing on September 10th in Toronto, ON, and hit 11 major cities before wrapping up on the 30th in Los Angeles, CA.
Steven Wilson’s band went on hiatus back in 2010, after over a decade together performing the best prog-rock hits. You may or may not have heard them, given that the band is known for being the most under-the-radar rock icons ever, but they influenced bands worldwide with their mind-bending hits and beautiful lyrics. Therefore, fans were curious about whether they would return to the stage.
Wilson went on to release other projects throughout the 2010s but remained frustratingly hush-hush about a possible reunion of Porcupine Tree. Therefore, it was a pleasant surprise when the band teased a new song, “Harridan,” back in November, along with the promise of a new record. Their eleventh studio album, Closure/Continuation, marks their first since 2009 and is scheduled to be released in June 2022.
They recently released the latest single, “Of the New Day,” which takes a grim turn that’s not exactly surprising after a two-year pandemic. Wilson describes it as a “song of rebirth, emerging from darkness” and gives a mind-bending explanation about the track’s intent.
“It sounds deceptively simple, a recognizably atypical Porcupine Tree ballad. That is until you realize that the length of the bars is constantly changing, flipping between bars of regular 4/4 time to 3/4, to 5/4 to 6/4, 11/4, so that the track never settles into any steady time,” he says. “It’s what Porcupine Tree can sometimes do really well, come up with a basic idea that’s almost intellectual or mathematical, but carry it off in a way that sounds completely natural and accessible.”
“At least I hope there’s no sense of us being clever for the sake of it or putting technique over musicality. That is unless you want to specifically home in on that side of the composition.” Compositions have made Porcupine Tree an inspiration to artists everywhere, like electronic producer Seven Lions and Swedish group Katatonia, and you can hear them all on their first tour in over a decade.
