Hank Williams Jr. is celebrating “Family Tradition” in more ways than one on his latest tour! The outlaw country legend is commemorating 45 years of his 1979 album of the same name, and he’s taking a few friends along for the ride. With help from Whiskey Myers, Neal McCoy, Charley Crockett, Old Crow Medicine Show and more, he’ll kick off on April 5th in Birmingham, AL. The singer will visit thirteen cities including Bristow, VA, Clarkston, MI, and Virginia Beach, VA, before concluding on September 14th in Kansas City, MO.
One thing to know about Hank Williams Jr.? He hardly ever tours anymore. The Country Music Hall of Fame inductee has already sold more than 70 million records, released a whopping 54 albums, and served as an inspiration for everybody from Walker Hayes to Shooter Jennings. Family Traditions was a turning point for Williams Jr. when it was released right before the height of his fame in the 1980s. Drawing elements from R&B and soul music, tracks like “I Fought The Law” and “Old Flame, New Love” allowed the singer to honor his late father, country music legend Hank Williams. However, they also incorporated pleasantly surprising sounds that helped the younger Williams forge his own path as an artist.
Many of these songs remain a setlist staple at Hank Williams Jr. concerts nearly half a century later, and he’s thrilled to pull out all his instruments and musical improvisations in 2024. The 74-year-old is something of a musical prodigy known for playing harmonica, bass, keyboard, piano and more — often all at the same time — and you’ll get to see him in action as he celebrates one of his favorite albums.
