Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service 2024 Tour Announcement – 20th Anniversary Tour Schedule
Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service have extended their 20th anniversary tour into 2024! Joined by Slow Pulp, both of Ben Gibbard’s groups will begin on April 23rd in Atlanta, GA. They’ll continue through May 15th in Portland, OR.
“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” says Ben Gibbard. “The Postal Service record came out, ‘Transatlanticism’ came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.” So much so, that he couldn’t simply leave the 20th anniversary of these two albums in 2023. He’s starting 2024 with new tour dates and appreciation for the projects that made him an unforgettable name in the indie, emo, and electronic music scenes.
The Death Cab for Cutie frontman is most often recognized for his main gig, which has produced endless alternative and indie rock hits since the late 1990s. Who doesn’t love “Soul Meets Body,” “You Are A Tourist,” and “The New Year,” plus recent tracks from the band’s tenth album, 2022’s Asphalt Meadows? However, Gibbard also wants to pay homage to his equally-important side gig, The Postal Service, which took the synth-pop world by storm in the early 2000s.
While The Postal Service only released one album, Give Up, it was all they needed to become a musical mainstay. Songs like “Such Great Heights” and “We Will Become Silhouettes” instantly became concert essentials and go-to songs for people’s MySpace profiles! And while Gibbard led the way, we also can’t forget about the group’s other musical geniuses, Jenny Lewis or Jimmy Tamborello. They’ll be reuniting with their old friend Gibbard to play Give Up from start to finish. All the while, instilling a sense of nostalgia for millennials everywhere.
“Given that both records were celebrated as headphone-ready breakup balms, it was a bit jarring when the bands announced a joint anniversary tour anchored by two nights at Madison Square Garden,” Variety wrote in last year’s concert review. “Yet even if Gibbard’s songwriting feels comfortable in hushed, quiet moments, the size of the fan base proved to be anything but modest.” “While so many anniversary tours feel like paint-by-the-numbers affairs,” they continued, “Gibbard’s boundless enthusiasm and thoughtful takes on his past was a refreshing case of an artist trying to deliver joy and happiness. Even if the songs themselves are so, so sad.”
Ben Gibbard practically invented the “sad songs with upbeat melodies” trend, which you’ll hear firsthand at the Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service tour. The charismatic frontman brings his all to both bands, and you can’t miss out on the quintessential 20th anniversary tour of 2024. Get tickets now!
