How the Grinch Stole Christmas in Theater, 2021 Performance Schedule

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a beloved holiday tale that’s been told for decades – through books, film, and stage! You can now watch Dr. Seuss’s classic story come to life in a theater near you, as the titular character overcomes his demons to discover the magic of Christmas.

You’ve likely read the 1957 book by Dr. Seuss and watched the 2000 film with Jim Carrey around the holidays each year, but How the Grinch Stole Christmas translates into a musical in a way like you’ve never seen it before. The Grinch may be a “mean one,” as the song says, but he’s also a charmer, and you’ll get lost in the holiday spirit as his dog Max narrates the story from the stage. The show is now playing in Washington, DC, San Diego, CA, and Atlanta, GA.

The Grinch’s origins are made clear at the beginning of the musical. He lives alone up in the mountains while the town of Whoville bustles about below him, basking in the joy of Christmas as he expresses his hate for the holiday. The Who’s believe the Grinch to be a monster with a heart that’s “two sizes too small,” and you may agree as he sings numbers like “I Hate Christmas Eve.” Come on, who besides the Grinch could hate such a joyous occasion?

Of course, it’s not quite what it seems. The Grinch has been singled out by the Who’s since he was a child, and it’s not until a kind little girl named Cindy Lou Who intervenes that he’s forced to reevaluate his hate for the holiday. Without any spoilers, seasonal numbers like “Welcome, Christmas,” “One of a Kind,” “Down the Mountain,” and “Stealing Christmas” tells the tale of how he rages on before eventually redeeming himself.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the ideal holiday musical for the entire family, as it’s based on a half-century-old story that both kids and their parents were raised. The New York Times called it “100 times better than any bedtime story,” while Associated Press called the Grinch “the most loveable Christmas villain of them all.” This story is packed with lessons and love, and it’s a must-see for the holiday season!
