American Buffalo, in Theater – 2022 Performance Schedule
American Buffalo is one of the best plays returning to New York City in spring 2022, featuring a few Broadway veterans and the vulgar-yet-witty humor you expect from the 1975 classic. Catch stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell, and Darren Criss in the reimagined show, running from March 22nd through July 10th at Circle in the Square Theatre.
Tickets for the 16-week run are going quickly, as fans have been waiting for years to see American Buffalo. The show, based on David Mamet’s play that premiered in Chicago in 1975 and on Broadway two years later, was originally set to begin in March 2020. Of course, the showrunners had no idea that the pandemic would shut down Broadway along with life as we know it.
After several postponements, the three men are ready to return to their rightful place on Broadway. They’ll be singing less and talking more in a play that’s been performed for decades, which focuses on themes like loyalty, greed, and brotherhood in the most unorthodox ways.
American Buffalo tells the tale of Donny (Fishburne), a thrift store owner, who mistakenly sells a buffalo nickel to one of his customers for significantly less than its worth. Driven by desire to reach the “top of the heap,” he enlists the help of Bobby (Criss) and Teach (Rockwell) to steal the coin back and reap the rewards. As you can expect, not everything goes according to plan, but it’s quite amusing to watch the three men plan their burglary.
“The virtue of Mamet is to make us all recognize ourselves in these three devils,” Broadway World says about the play. “American Buffalo is a morality play, an extraordinarily well-constructed tragicomedy with dialogue and full of vigor, full of truth, and I’m pretty sure, that the performance of these three masters of acting, will make an incredible work. And, who knows? Maybe one of them will win a Tony Award.”
