Wilco 2023 Tour Announcement – US Tour Schedule
Wilco is hitting the road in the fall of 2023! Supporting their twelfth album, Cruel Country, Jeff Tweedy and his bandmates will begin on September 25th in Wichita, KS. They’ll make dozens of stops, primarily centered on the West Coast, before wrapping up on October 27th in Bentonville, AR.
Joined by My Brightest Diamond and Nina Nastasia, Wilco is ready to bring a bit of heel-kicking, genre-bending fun to the California coast. They’re hosting a three-night residency in Los Angeles, plus shows in Monterey, Berkeley, and Santa Barbara! But have no fear, as Wilco will also make its way across the country to Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, Denver, CO, and more.
Even after completing their Midwest and Southern tour earlier this year, the Chicago jam band isn’t nearly ready to wrap up the Cruel Country celebrations yet. You see, it was a turning point for Wilco in which they abandoned the alternative rock they’ve played since the mid-1990s. Instead, they embraced the idea of becoming a little country and a little rock and roll for the first time in three decades!
Sure, they’ve always incorporated heartland and Nashville-inspired elements into their best Wilco songs, like “Impossible Germany,” “How to Fight Loneliness,” and “Poor Places.” But instead of fighting their flawed reputation as a country-inspired group, they decided to lean into it instead. The result? A series of honky tonk hits that Mojo, Rolling Stone, and Uncut all agreed to be one of the best albums of the year.
As for what inspired Wilco’s 2020s musical transition? Frontman Jeff Tweedy explained an online letter prior to the release of Cruel Country in May 2022. “I think there’s been an assumption over the years that Wilco is some sort of country band,” he wrote, “There’s a lot of evidence to support that way of thinking about our band because there have been elements of country music in everything we’ve ever done.”
“But to be honest, we’ve never been particularly comfortable with accepting that definition of the music we make,” he continued, “With this album, though, I’ll tell you what, Wilco is digging in and calling it country.” The whiskey, cowboy boots, and square-dancing anthems just keep coming as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Cruel Country, and we’re perfectly okay with that! Who else can’t wait to line dance to “Hints,” “I Am My Mother,” or “Falling Apart (Right Now)” at a fall 2023 Wilco concert?
However, they’ll also be sure to throw in some older alternative rock hits, like “Jesus, Etc.,” “Poor Places,” and “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.” Wilco is next-level impressive at every show, and we can’t wait to see them continue their Cruel Country era this fall. Get your Wilco tickets now!
