Natalie Merchant 2023 Tour Announcement – Keep Your Courage Tour Schedule
Natalie Merchant is touring in 2023 in support of her latest album, Keep Your Courage! The alternative rock singer will kick off on April 14th in Poughkeepsie, NY, making stops in Philadelphia, PA, Portland, ME, Providence, RI, and more before concluding on September 29th in San Diego, CA.
“I am so excited to announce that I’ll be releasing a new album and touring in 2023!” Merchant wrote on Instagram, “Keep Your Courage will be released on April 14, an album full of lush arrangements and special guests.” “The subject matter is as diverse as the music, songs of love and loss, of hope and despair,” she continued, “Inspired by: a Greek myth, a heroic poet, a saint, a Biblical parable, a sea-faring rogue, a diabolical angel, a dark chapter of Irish history, the goddess of passion, and a generation of women who changed the world.” It’s a lot to be inspired by, but what else can we expect from Natalie Merchant? She’s been delivering lyrical lessons along with powerful alternative rock vocals since the 1980s, and is starting a new chapter with Keep Your Courage.
This album marks the first set of new music from Merchant since 2015’s Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings — featuring lush orchestral arrangements, contributions from a Celtic folk group, and more. These distinctive sounds are meant to symbolize all types of emotions, both the good and the bad, and help you “keep your courage” in the face of fear. You know, just like Merchant did during the pandemic! She’s had a long and eventful career, from her time as the singer of 10,000 Maniacs in the 1980s to her solo career in the 1990s, but she’s never released a project quite this close to her heart. And listeners will feel both seen and heard with these new Natalie Merchant songs.
“The songs contained within this album were written and recorded during the global pandemic that began in the winter of 2019 and is in its fifth wave as I write, in the autumn of 2022,” Merchant stated in her album liner notes. “It has been and continues to be, a period of great flux and fear on every level: global, national, communal, familial, and personal. “But this is not an album about the coronavirus or the chaos it caused,” she continued, “For the most part, this is an album about the human heart.” “The word ‘courage’ has its root in the Latin word for heart, cor, and we see it over and over in many languages: le coeur, il cuore, o coração, el corazón. This is a song cycle that maps the journey of a courageous heart.”
Merchant has shown her courage and talent for decades now, but this is a new beginning for the alternative and folk-rock singer. She can’t wait to share her first new album in years, and hopes to see you at the show! Get your tickets to see Natalie Merchant today.
