Cigarettes After Sex 2024 Tour Announcement – X’s World Tour Schedule
Cigarettes After Sex is embarking on the “X’s Tour” later in 2024! The dream pop trio is thrilled to celebrate their upcoming third album, X’s, set for release on July 12th. They’ll begin these Cigarettes After Sex concerts on August 31st in Montreal, QC, continuing through October 11th in Los Angeles, CA. Cigarettes After Sex will also make an appearance at Bonnaroo Music Festival.
With an eerily ambient sound that symbolizes the pleasurable things in life — like picturesque sunsets, deep midnight conversations, or, well, Cigarettes After Sex — the band knows their audience. And that’s why X’s is marked with subtle musical changes that demonstrates their growth since 2019’s Cry, while remaining the same Cigarettes After Sex you’ve cried and sung along to since 2008. How so? Frontman Greg Gonzalez has jumped forward in time to find musical inspiration from the 70s and 80s, while this entire record is based on one long, incredibly complicated former relationship.
“The record feels brutal,” says Gonzalez. “I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn’t scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it—in a good way. I don’t have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget.” Blurring the lines between ambient pop, shoegaze, slowcore, and indie rock, Cigarettes After Sex’s music has always felt like a sonic liquid IV for the soul. And if the first single off X’s, “Tejano Blue,” tells us anything, it’s that they’re entering our dreams from a whole new dimension.
A sensual love song to the highest degree, this single pays homage to Gonzalez’s Texas roots, in which he drew inspiration from artists like Selena and more. “I grew up in El Paso & Tejano music is huge there,” he says. “You could go to a lot of the bars in the city & hear artists like Selena, Los Ángeles Azules & La Mafia playing over the speakers. It was in the atmosphere around me back then, but I always rejected it and gravitated towards anything else I was attracted to really. “
“Years later when I was living in New York City I finally started listening to Selena’s ‘Como La Flor’ at the same time that I was also listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins,” he continued. “I had the idea then to try to combine both of their sounds somehow, which felt a bit strange, but also felt like it was coming from a genuine place of rediscovering & finally connecting with the music that I heard around me in my youth.” While there are countless sub-genres under the Cigarettes After Sex umbrella, we’re perfectly fine with adding one or two more. Especially when it results in a soothing and sexy track like “Tejano Blue.”
