Arcade Fire is making a serious comeback, with the Canadian indie-rock band announcing their first trek in four years. Joined by Beck and Feist, they’ll kick off performances beginning October 28th in Washington, DC, with visits to Boston, MA, Brooklyn, NY, Los Angeles, CA, and more before concluding on December 1st in Toronto, ON.
“It’s been amazing to start to play stuff in front of actual sweaty humans,” the band humorously wrote on the Arcade Fire Instagram, where they later announced their upcoming We tour. The trek is named for their recently-released sixth album, the first in five years, and they can’t wait to play in front of packed crowds for the first time in years. They’ve gotten their feet wet with performances on late-night shows like Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show, but wait until you encounter one of the world’s biggest indie-rock bands.
We can be interpreted in many ways, but it’s safe to say that the quarantine writing cycle inspired Arcade Fire. New songs like “Age of Anxiety” I and II don’t shy away from serious topics. The New York Times refers to these tracks as “solemn, piano-driven ballads before slowly building toward explosive, rhythmic release.” It’s the Arcade Fire way, and they’re destined to drive a new legion of fans their way with We.
Their last record, Everything Now, received mixed reviews. It took on a more dance-rock sound than the art-rock you’re used to from Arcade Fire, and people weren’t shy about their feelings about the band’s new direction. While you can never please everybody, it did inspire Arcade Fire to rethink its strategy towards songs, and the result was We… a beautiful blend of indie-rock and dance-pop that fans from any era can enjoy.
