Boy George began as the lead singer of the pop group Culture Club in 1981, releasing hit songs like “Karma Chameleon,” “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” and “Time (Clock of the Heart.) While the British music scene had seen plenty of revolutionary frontmen at that point, they’d never witnessed one quite like Boy George. He followed in the footsteps of David Bowie and Marc Bolan to blur the lines between gender expression. His colorful outfits, hair, and makeup helped entire generations feel seen, and his songs and style remain iconic in 2022. He’s toned down the theatrics a bit over time, but he’s still the legendary singer you know and love.
Unlike his glam rock pioneer idols, George’s music is more of the blue-eyed soul variety.
