The Prom, in Theater – 2022-2023 Performance Schedule
Breaking the fourth wall is an art form on Broadway, from Maureen asking the audience to participate during her solo song in RENT to Aladdin asking them for help with the magic lamp. The Prom puts a new spin on this theater trope, opting instead to put the crowd into the shoes of ex-Broadway stars who have since lost their luster. What happens when the golden-throated, fame-powered people on stage begin to fade from the limelight, and what will they do to get it back? Apparently, the answer is to visit a small-town prom in Indiana to change the status quo and help a lesbian student bring her girlfriend while reviving their glory days. And that’s the story you’ll follow with The Prom.
The Prom was short-lived on Broadway, ironically. However, it’s currently drawing in huge crowds in several US cities! The show plays in Los Angeles, CA, through September 11th and will make stops in Kansas City, MO, Bloomington, IN, Buffalo, NY, White Plains, NY, and Phoenix, AZ, through mid-2023.
Some may remember the Netflix adaptation of The Prom from December 2020, with Ryan Murphy (of Glee and American Horror Story fame) bringing a bit of excitement into quarantine. Believe it or not, the stage adaption is even better. It begins with four ex-Broadway stars with a bit of an ulterior motive, as they desperately desire the spotlight again. However, things take an emotional turn when they visit a conservative Indiana town and meet Emma, whose prom is canceled by the school board after she expresses her desire to bring a girlfriend. Powered by the need for both change and revived fame, the visitors do their best to promote acceptance and overcome adversity in the school once again.
The songs in The Prom may be a bit upbeat and fun, but the subject matter takes a more somber turn. The plot is based on a true story from 2010, in which the student in question garnered online support from celebrities like Green Day and Lance Bass to bring her girlfriend. It’s a transformed world we live in today compared to twelve years ago, with more opportunities for change, but some communities still need convincing. This is a central theme of The Prom — mixing modern-day “wokeness” with emotional memories from not even that long ago to make you laugh, cry, and laugh again.
The Prom is a perfect way to spend the night, and you won’t regret taking center stage for this upbeat and emotional musical. Get your tickets to the show in Los Angeles, CA, Buffalo, NY, Phoenix, AZ, and more!; you
