Anastasia, in Theater – 2022-2023 Performance Schedule
Are you hoping to take a “Journey to the Past” with Russia’s lost grand duchess? Anastasia is now playing in over a dozen cities across the country, and you’ll get a balanced dose of nostalgia and nobility with this musical based on the 1997 animated film. Join her as she attempts to rediscover her sense of self, locate her lost family, and battle evil forces as she sings her way to the City of Lights.
Anastasia played on Broadway for around two years, ending its run in early 2019. This coming year, you can see the show in cities like Seattle, WA, Fresno, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, Miami, FL, and many more.
Those who constantly rewatched the film in the late 1990s are familiar with the basic plot, though the musical contains a handful of changes. In the early 1900s, the Grand Duchess Anastasia is devastated upon learning that her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, is moving to Paris. She’s gifted a music box that becomes essential to the plot.
Years later, the Bolsheviks invaded the palace during a royal ball and captured and executed the Romanov family. The viewers are led to believe that this includes Anastasia, who slows her escape by going back to retrieve her music box. However, ten years later, a different story is told. “A Rumor in St. Petersburg” is the musical number that tells how Anastasia survived the attack, despite having amnesia and being unable to remember her royal identity.
She falls into the hands of the handsome young Dmitry and good-natured Vlad. These men hope to pull off “the biggest con in history” by grooming a young woman to pose as Anastasia and extracting the reward money from her grandmother. They promise her a trip to Paris to find her family, unknowing of the fact that she’s the actual Grand Duchess and will be intercepted by evil forces on her journey to the City of Lights. Can the girl now called Anya battle those who wish to harm her, her growing feelings for Dmitry, and her lost sense of self? You’ll see it in Anastasia.
Many songs from the film are present in the musical, including “Rumor in St. Petersburg,” “Journey to the Past,” “Learn to Do It,” and “Paris Holds the Key (To Your Heart.).” However, there are also plenty of new tracks to sing along to, along with insights into Anya’s story. The longer running time means that we get more information about her memory (or lack thereof) and feelings of longing towards her long-lost grandmother, a yearning for a family that many can relate to. It’s a stunning musical that the entire family can enjoy, and it’s playing all through 2022.
