Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2023 Performance Schedule
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is coming back to Broadway! For the first time in over four decades, the Stephen Sondheim musical is returning to New York City with some very famous names in tow. Iconic baritone-tenor Josh Groban will play the demon barber himself, while Annaleigh Ashford takes on the role of Mrs. Lovett, his secret admirer, and partner in crime. Are you ready to witness a play packed with razor-sharp (pun intended) vocals and campy comedy, and terror? It’s time to get your Sweeney Todd tickets.
The show originally premiered on Broadway in 1979 before making its way to London’s West End, eventually winning the Tony Award for “Best Musical.” It’s been many years since Sweeney Todd graced the Great White Way, but now he’s back with a vengeance! Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will begin playing at New York City’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on February 26th, with dates scheduled through fall 2023. Additionally, the show is also playing in Austin, TX, Millville, NJ, Seattle, WA, and Racine, WI, throughout the rest of the year!
Maybe you know Sweeney Todd from the 1973 play by Christopher Bond, which helped inspire the Sondheim production. Or perhaps your knowledge of the demon barber is more recent and rooted in pop culture, taking notes from Johnny Depp’s portrayal in Tim Burton’s 2007 film. The bottom line is that whether you’re a lifelong fan or recent admirer of the show, you’re bound to have a scary good time watching this slasher story on stage. Where does it begin? Let us tell you about Sweeney Todd, the man formerly known as Benjamin Barker.
You see, Benjamin Barker was unjustly exiled to Australia years ago by Judge Turpin, who abused Barker’s wife and cost him the life he knew. After fifteen years away, he returns to London under the pseudonym of “Sweeney Todd” to get his revenge. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that he takes his job as a barber a bit too seriously… giving his clients a very close shave that ends them in moments. And when his neighbor Mrs. Lovett, who owns a meat pie shop, comes into the picture… things get even more complicated.
This is a story of revenge with lots of (fake) blood and complex emotions, but these darker themes are softened by the gorgeous musical numbers. Songs like “No Place Like London,” “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” and “God, That’s Good” will be mind-blowing with Josh Groban behind the microphone, with a lot of help from Ashford’s Mrs. Lovett! This musical sensation has been absent from Broadway for years and brings all the biggest Sondheim fans into the theater, so you don’t want to miss your chance to see Sweeney Todd in action!
