Moulin Rouge!, The Musical in Theater, 2021-2022 Performance Schedule
When discussing Moulin Rouge!, let’s first talk about the elephant in the room. Literally. A gigantic (fake) elephant sits in one of the balcony boxes of the theater, reminding you of the timeless and ever-theatrical production you’re about to witness. Here’s the thing: the elephant isn’t even close to the most eye-catching aspect of Moulin Rouge!
This jukebox musical is scheduled to play in four major cities, and you don’t want to miss your chance to see the show that blends Parisian flair with modern pop hits. Moulin Rouge! is now back on Broadway at New York City’s Al Hirschfield Theatre, with plans to play in Chicago, IL, Minneapolis, MN, and Los Angeles, CA.
Based on the 2001 film of the same name, this exquisite musical features Parisian backdrops, risque costumes, over-the-top dances, and surprisingly modern tunes. Moulin Rouge! has received critical acclaim in the two-and-a-half years it’s been on Broadway, even with a long break due to the pandemic, and won a whopping ten awards at the 74th annual Tony Awards in September 2021.
What type of artistry is going on that helped Moulin Rouge! win Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Performance in multiple categories? You’ll have to see for yourself. However, those who have seen the 2001 film with Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are well-versed, as the musical closely follows the film.
Christian is a broke composer from Ohio who arrives in the heart of Paris in 1899, searching for a bohemian adventure. He befriends fellow struggling creatives Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago, who convinced him to write a musical melodrama produced by the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret club.
At the same club, star performer Satine is encouraged to seduce the rich Duke of Monroth to secure enough money to keep the club from going into bankruptcy. After Satine and Christian meet in a “mistaken identity” scene that wouldn’t be out of place in a sitcom… Christian begins to fall for Satine, and the rest is in the musical.
A French cabaret actress from the year 1900 singing Rihanna? Only in Moulin Rouge! Like the film, this jukebox musical chooses to sing popular hits rather than original tunes. That means everything from Katy Perry and Britney Spears to Florence and the Machine and Walk the Moon.
The show performs showstopper medleys all night long, featuring top hits of all genres, most recognizable from the 2000s. Christian and Satine serenade each other with Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” on the streets of Paris, while “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga opens Act II.
Don’t worry, you’ll still get “Lady Marmalade,” “Come What May,” and other classics from the film… but this play is a showstopper from start to finish that will make you reminisce on music from the 2000s. Oh, and make you want to go to a burlesque show! Check the performance schedule below and get your tickets to see Moulin Rouge!
