Want to see a show made with blood, sweat, tears…and more blood? Little Shop of Horrors is back in New York City with a brand new cast! Catch the beloved horror comedy rock musical at Westside Theatre Upstairs, featuring Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood in the lead roles.
Additionally, the show is playing with different, but equally talented, casts in cities like Yucaipa, CA, Washington, DC, Kansas City, MO, and more throughout 2024. But for now, we can’t stop talking about the Off-Broadway production that’s making everybody jump out of their seat and burst into song. In that order. Corbin Bleu and Constance Wu have killed it (literally) as the nerdy underdog Seymour and sassy, but sweet Audrey over the past few months. And now you’re in for some scary good fun with their successors.
Anybody who watched Darren Criss on Glee, along with his lead roles in Broadway favorites like Hedwig and The Angry Inch and American Buffalo, knows that he’s a triple threat performer. And award-winning actress Evan Rachel Wood has a set of pipes that will blow you away during “Suddenly Seymour!” Along with more iconic numbers produced by Disney legends Alan Menken and Howard Ashman that are dripping in magic with every note.
But here’s the thing…Little Shop of Horrors is often more reminiscent of a horror film than a fairy tale. The central villains of the film are a Venus flytrap named Aubrey II that thrives on the taste of human flesh, along with Dr. Scrivello, Aubrey’s abusive boyfriend that Seymour tries and often fails to protect her from. And when you throw the two main characters and their respective demons into the mix, there’s more than just a few antagonists on a mission to make Seymour and Audrey’s life hell.
That being said, they may just manage to conquer them through the power of strength, compassion, and song. You’ll be obsessed with musical numbers like “Grow For Me,” “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Dentist!,” and of course, “Suddenly Seymour,” the standout track that’s awed entire generations of musical theater junkies. With a soundtrack comprised mostly of rock with elements of doo-wop and early Motown, Little Shop of Horrors is true to its time yet has still aged gracefully. And we’re obsessed.
