Les Misérables, in Theater – 2022-2023 Performance Schedule

A note to any musical theater fan… you can’t let yourself miss a performance of Les Misérables. The legendary musical set in 19th-century France has been a hit on the stage for over four decades and a beloved story for over a century. It puts you in the heart of Paris long before it became what we know now — with less croissants and dreamy lights and more injustice that Jean Valjean must fight through the power of song.

It’s been 42 years since Les Misérables premiered onstage in Paris, and the show based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel has come a long way. It’s held residences in the West End and Broadway that have lasted over a decade while also becoming an Academy Award-winning 2012 film starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, and more. Les Misérables begins in 1800s France, where prisoner Jean Valjean is released on parole after serving 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. After an act of kindness from a local Bishop, he vows to become a changed man. Eight years later, he’s adopted a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine and aims to present the same consideration for others shown to him after his release. Of course, this becomes difficult when prison guard-turned-police inspector Javert has made it his life’s mission to hunt down Valjean and put him back in prison.

While Valjean remains the central character throughout the show, others are introduced as they attempt to fight poverty and violence. The Paris of the 1800s was nothing like the romantic city we know today, and these characters display their passion, hope, dreams, and resilience as they prepare for the 1832 Paris Uprising. It’s a bittersweet tale in which not every character will get a happy ending. Still, you’ll enjoy a catalog of breathtaking musical numbers and a beautiful dose of history with every showing of Les Misérables.

A series of recognizable songs are performed throughout the musical, including “I Dreamed a Dream,” which Anne Hathaway sang in the 2012 film. There’s also “Castle on a Cloud,” sung by a young Cosette before she begins her new life after being adopted by Valjean, and “On My Own,” Eponine’s power ballad performed in countless high school musical auditions.
