Hairspray, The Musical in Theater – 2022-2023 Performance Schedule
Hairspray is coming your way! The beloved musical is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, and it’s never been a better time to see the upbeat-yet-innovative show. Set in 1960s Baltimore, the plot follows good-hearted teenager Tracy Turnblad and her sudden rise to fame when she lands a spot on The Corny Collins Show. However, it’s not all dance moves and adoring fans. She must also handle discrimination due to her size plus racial injustice as she fights for a better future for herself and her friends.
Some may recall the 2007 film, Hairspray, with an ensemble cast including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, etc. Believe it or not, the stage show has even more excitement and unbelievable dance moves. Enjoy the colorful set designs and catchy R&B numbers like “Good Morning Baltimore,” “Welcome to the ’60s,” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” which you can hear in dozens of US cities in 2022-2023. These include Knoxville, TN, Boston, MA, Milwaukee, WI, Costa Mesa, CA, and more.
In many ways, the main character of Hairspray is just like us. Tracy Turnblad dreams of leaving her everyday life behind and becoming the main character on her favorite TV show. She eventually gets to dance her heart out, but there are more than a few bumps. These include a messy love triangle with the show’s leading heartthrob, Link Larkin, marital issues between her parents, and determining how to use her platform to advocate for social change.
The 20th anniversary of Hairspray reminds us that this show has aged well, and it’s very bittersweet. In 2022, we continue to fight for racial equality, and equal opportunities for all like Tracy Turnblad did. And while we’re able to acknowledge how far we’ve come since the days of Hairspray in the 1960s, we’re also taking note of the very long journey ahead in the fight for justice. This show presents an excellent opportunity to talk to your young kids, friend group, or extended family about how they can join the march for change.
