Come From Away, in Theater – 2022 Performance Schedule
If there’s one thing that Canadians are known for, it’s hospitality. The “kind Canadian” belief can be found on sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother or in a bar conversation with a Toronto-born stranger, and like any other stereotype… sometimes it’s true, and sometimes it’s not. However, the musical Come from Away will have you believing that Canadians are the best type of people.
The musical is currently playing on Broadway, with plans to run through June 26. You can also see Come from Away in many other cities, including San Jose, CA, Chicago, IL, Washington, DC, Dallas, TX!
The Canadian musical begins on the morning of September 11, 2001, when 38 airliners carrying over 7,000 passengers were forced to land in the Canadian town of Gander as a result of the tragic terrorist attacks in New York City. While the tiny village wasn’t exactly equipped to hold thousands of extra people, a beautiful thing happened when the locals opened their homes to these strangers in need.
The people of Gander provided food, shelter, and moral support to passengers far away from home and terrified about the safety of their friends and family amid the attacks – regardless of race, gender, or sexual identity. The play explores these incredible acts of kindness and the triumph of humanity over hate.
If your tissues aren’t out yet, wait until you hear the musical score. Come Far Away combines folk-rock, country, and pop to tell a story of kindness and compassion. “Me and the Sky,” tells the story of Becky, a pilot forced to battle sexism to get the career she wanted, while “I Am Here” gets even heavier as a mother sings about her fear for the safety of her Manhattan firefighter son.
Musical numbers like “Phoning Home/Costume Party” and “On the Edge” express the passenger’s fear and initial discomfort, but there are no villain songs… because there indeed are no bad guys in Come Far Away. The show is all about the good in humanity and rising above the hate… something everybody is capable of. You’ll be leaving the theater with a big smile on your face, which is the ultimate reason to see this shining musical. Check the following dates and see Come Far Away in a city near you!
