The Milk Carton Kids 2022 Tour Announcement – US Tour Schedule
The Milk Carton Kids are finally touring again in fall 2022! The indie-folk duo will kick off on October 15th in Los Angeles, CA, making 14 stops before concluding on November 4th in Salt Lake City, UT.
The band, composed of Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, originally planned to embark on their first post-pandemic The Milk Carton Kids tour last year but sadly had to cancel. They called it “not earth shattering but nonetheless disappointing news” in a statement, and their legions of fans could certainly agree. They’ve delivered over a decade of indie folk hits like “Michigan,” “Hope of a Lifetime,” “Younger Years,” and “There By Your Side,” which sound even more flawless in the flesh. While they haven’t released an album in a few years, since 2019’s The Only Ones, The Milk Carton Kids have an entire catalog of catchy singles to play for the audience. They’re also celebrating one decade (plus one!) of their second album, Prologue, which made headlines in music publications at the time for several reasons. These were the days before Spotify ruled the music industry, and they followed in the footsteps of folk hero Ani DiFranco by changing how folk fans listened to new music.
They allowed free download of Prologue while producing a minimal number of physical copies. The CDs and a small number of vinyl records they had were sold for physical money at their concerts, which created an even more considerable buzz around them. To the point where people are still talking about it eleven years later. “We joked to our fans they could ‘choose whichever option they thought correlated to what type of person they thought they were,’” Pattengale notes about Prologue, “But, really, we wanted whoever had the desire to listen to be able to do so.”
They’ve continued the innovation through all seven albums, with their latest being no exception. The Milk Carton Kids concerts are also known for being extra innovative and improv-packed, drawing inspiration from their idols in the Smothers Brothers. “The idea of being funny between folk songs gives us this weird sense that the songs are good enough to stand on their own, and maybe the comedy is good enough to stand on its own,” Ryan told American Songwriter. “But I do think it’s kind of missing the point in the end, which is they kind of play off each other, and they work together.” He concluded, “You have these completely earnest, heartfelt moments to contrast with whatever silliness is going on. And that’s what the Smothers Brothers did so well.”
