Snarky Puppy 2022 Tour Announcement
A Snarky Puppy tour is happening in early 2023! You can see the instrumental ensemble in 20 cities, kicking off on March 29th in St. Paul, MN, and continuing through April 29th in Atlanta, GA.
Dubbed the “Empire Central tour,” this trek supports the group’s upcoming album of the same name. It has 16 tracks, including the recently-released single, “Trinity,” and will take listeners into a new era for the Grammy-winning group. Don’t worry; you’ll still get all the instrumental jazz idioms, world music, and funk-pop fusions you’re used to from Michael League and his fellow musicians. However, there are also a few twists and turns that can only come from years off the road and newfound perspective after a global pandemic.
The self-proclaimed “pop band that improvises a lot, without vocals” can do it all, and “Trinity” proves it. The new single is equal parts old-timey jazz and made for the modern restaurant chat, and it’s destined to bring the noise during this Snarky Puppy tour. Both from the band and the crowd, that is. They’ve played a few so far in 2022, including guest appearances on Steely Dan’s “Earth After Hours tour.” Of course, now they’re ready to embark on their own headlining Snarky Puppy tour and take their new music to another level.
Empire Central has a lot of sentimental value for Snarky Puppy. It was recorded near Dallas, TX, the same city where the group met at their college’s jazz program and became a chart-topping unit. It also features the last recorded performance by 80s funk pioneer Bernard Wright before his death in May 2022. Of course, the instrumentals and improvisation will always be the thing they hold nearest and dearest.
The album consists of three guitarists, four keyboardists, two brass, a violinist, two reeds, three drummers, and three percussionists… and each one has a vital role to play on this Snarky Puppy tour. They’ll play all your favorite fusions of jazz, pop, rock, and world music in a new-yet-familiar way, and it’s unlike any other music collective you’ll see today.
