Janelle Monae is heading your way! The R&B-soul songstress is touring the US on her “The Age of Pleasure Tour.” Supporting her upcoming fifth album, she’ll begin on August 11th in San Francisco, CA, continuing through October 18th in Los Angeles, CA.
It’s been five years since Monae last released an album, and she’s put every last ounce of energy into her latest release. We can’t wait for The Age of Pleasure to come out on June 9th, but she’s already given us a sneak peek! New singles like “Float” and “Lipstick Lover” are sexy and soulful, like Monae. These new tracks focus on the themes of self-love and pleasure while also being present in the moment without anxiety. She opened up about the basis of The Age of Pleasure as the latest cover star of Rolling Stone, sharing relatable remedies from her time as an artist. Additionally, this record is also a love letter to her friends in the Black community. AKA, those who have provided personal and professional inspiration over her two-decade career.
“It was inspired by all of my friends, my community of folks who are from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, the Caribbean, Atlanta, L.A., Chicago,” she told Rolling Stone. “Seeing all of us together in our Blackness, in the love that we had in our eyes for each other. People from the continent f–k around with trap from Atlanta. You know what I’m saying? I love how the diaspora — we talk to each other.”
“I think being an artist gets lonely,” Monáe continued. “Most people don’t understand what’s going on in my brain. The community has been so helpful to me; it’s beautiful that I have a title called The Age of Pleasure because it actually re-centers me. It’s not about an album anymore. I’ve changed my whole lifestyle.”
