Don McLean has announced a massive 50th anniversary tour for his biggest single, “American Pie” – a cultural phenomenon that helped to kickstart his nearly six-decade career. Catch the songwriting legend beginning January 28th in Honolulu, HI, with shows continuing for months before wrapping up in North America on July 9th in Phoenix, AZ.
“After spending the past 18 months at home, I am thrilled to be getting back on the road with my band,” McLean said in a statement. “2022 marks the 50th anniversary from when ‘American Pie’ landed at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart and we will be celebrating on tour all year long. We will be performing all the songs from the American Pie album, plus many of the other hits that fans will be expecting to hear.”
“American Pie” is the album and track that started it all. Released in 1971 , the song is a nearly 9-minute ode to fallen rock stars Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens. It speaks not only of the tragic death of McLean’s musical idols, described as “the day the music died,” but also the loss of innocence for his generation.
With such a long-running time, the lyrics and beat are open to plenty of interpretation, and that’s exactly what fans and critics have done for the past fifty years.
