Depeche Mode 2023 Tour Announcement – Memento Mori Tour Schedule
Depeche Mode is back and bigger than ever! The synthpop icons have announced their fifteenth studio album, Memento Mori, set for release in 2023 plus a major Depeche Mode tour. These performances will kick off on March 23rd in Sacramento, CA, with stops in Los Angeles, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Chicago, IL. and more before concluding on April 14th in New York City.
“Finding stability in what we know and love, and focusing on what gives life meaning and purpose,” Martin Fore and Dave Gahan wrote on social media in August 2022 alongside an image of the Depeche Mode members in the recording studio. This immediately sparked conversations about a new album, and unsurprisingly, eagle-eyed fans were correct. Memento Mori is a bittersweet occasion for longtime supporters of the British synthpop group. The record marks the group’s first album in nearly six years, and is also their first without keyboardist and founding member Andy Fletcher since his death earlier this year. Fore and Gahan have stated that they intend to honor his memory with the Memento Mori tour and album, and we can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves.
While the songs on Memento Mori have been kept under wraps for now, Depeche Mode has been open about the direction they’re taking on their comeback album. It covers the themes of loss, yes, but also encourages listeners to never give up hope on a better future. “The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,’” Gahan told Rolling Stone, “A lot of the songs are going into that place of reminding ourselves that our time is fleeting, and you got to make the best of it — in a positive way.” Gore recalled that he first heard the Latin phrase from a friend, saying “I just thought, ‘What a great album title for the songs that had been written already.” While Fletcher isn’t around to hear these stunning new synthpop beats, his presence is very much alive on Memento Mori, and you can see firsthand on the Depeche Mode tour and record.
“Obviously, everybody will think that all of the songs were quickly written after Andy died,” Gore continued. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us. So I like the idea of ‘memento mori’ in a more positive way, in a ‘Live each day and make the most of your time here.’” Depeche Mode are known for many things — selling more than 100 million albums and earning a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, just to name a couple. However, they’re perhaps most known for their magical live performances that inspire you to live in the moment and let loose… even if for one night only. It’s not just the new songs you’ll be dancing along to but also classics like “Enjoy the Silence,” “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Everything Counts” and more, and they can’t wait to see you in the crowd.
