Strings is celebrating the release of his fifth album, Renewal, with bluegrass beats in every city. As the album name suggests, Renewal marks a new chapter for Billy Strings (real name: William Apostol). It wasn’t easy to follow up on his 2019 record, Home, which earned the singer a Grammy for “Best Bluegrass Album.” However, the new record takes some inspiration from his past while mostly looking toward the future.
Renewal is an album that features surprisingly heavy subject matter over the mellow bluegrass beats. “Leaders” is a track about human rights, with the chorus exclaiming, “we’re not the leaders anymore, all our believers washed ashore, we’ve got to find another door.” Songs like “In the Morning Light” and “Love and Regret” are about love and relationships; meanwhile, and “Hide and Seek” is a heartbreaking and nearly 10-minute track that serves as a tribute to Strings’ late best friend.
Strings is leaving his hard-partying past behind and diving headfirst into a new era with Renewal, both personally and professionally. While his voice is stunning and serene, his guitar is his primary instrument, and he told NPR that he often thinks with his fingers. “I’m trying to talk with my hands. It’s very much like when I’m playing stuff like that; it’s just I’m trying to convey a sort of emotion or say something with my guitar,” he told the publication. “
A lot of my favorite guitar players, you know, they sound like they’re laughing or begging or crying,” he continued. “Or, you know, Jimi Hendrix used to make his guitar sound like the bombs in Vietnam.
