Death Cab for Cutie 2026 Tour Announcement – I Built You a Tower Tour Schedule
Death Cab for Cutie are heading back across North America in 2027, and it’s a grand time for the emo darlings. Their “I Built You a Tower Tour” begins January 19 in Honolulu before the mainland run gets underway March 11 in Nashville, hitting Atlanta, Miami Beach, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Boston, New York and more before wrapping April 16 in Asheville. Indie newcomers Swapmeet will support the newly announced dates, including two-night stands in both Atlanta and Boston.
The tour supports I Built You a Tower, Death Cab’s 11th studio album and first release on an independent label in more than two decades. After spending the last few years revisiting Transatlanticism and Plans on anniversary tours, Ben Gibbard and company are finally looking forward again…well, kind of. In true Death Cab style, they’re still looking back on every painful memory in a way that makes you want to get out your old Vans and eyeliner. But while the lyrics are nostalgic, the substance represents one of their most mature albums yet.
“It’s putting the wonderful memories and the very painful ones into this edifice, trying to lock the door from the outside,” Gibbard told Rolling Stone Canada about the new record. “It’s like, ‘you stay in there, I can’t have you out of that building,’ but there’s always a moment where they escape … even though you think you’ve made an emotional break from that period or that time, it all kind of comes rushing back.”
The result? “Stone Over Water,” the beautifully miserable single that accompanied the 2027 tour announcement with a new animated video. Death Cab described it as a song for anyone who’s ever tried convincing themselves — and everybody around them — that they’re okay when they are very much not okay. So, basically, familiar territory for anyone who has ever put on Death Cab at 1 a.m. and decided to make an already questionable mood significantly worse.
Of course, the new songs have a lot of history to sit beside. “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” “Soul Meets Body,” “The Sound of Settling,” “Crooked Teeth,” “I Will Possess Your Heart,” and “A Movie Script Ending” helped make Death Cab one of the defining indie-rock bands of the 2000s. Transatlanticism became practically required listening for a generation of sensitive college kids….
While Plans pushed them further into the mainstream and earned the band its first Grammy nomination. The best part? This new chapter serves as a full-circle moment for Death Cab for Cutie fans. After more than 25 years, multiple lineup eras and enough sad songs to ruin several perfectly good evenings, they’re back on an indie label with a record that critics have compared to some of their strongest early work.
