This is the case in Waitress, the Tony-nominated musical that lets a woman bake for her life as she escapes her small town, abusive marriage, and restricting walls of her restaurant.
You may have heard about Waitress before, perhaps from the 2007 film starring Keri Russell or Katharine McPhee’s 2018 run in the titular role on Broadway. There’s also the tragic story of screenwriter Adrienne Shelley, who starred in the movie and could not see the musical come to fruition before her devastating death in 2006. While Shelley couldn’t see her masterpiece up close and personal, Waitress has become a global powerhouse that’s graced countless stages in the past fifteen years. This includes cities like Cleveland, OH, New Orleans, LA, Melbourne, FL, and Houston, TX, where the show will be playing in 2022-2023.
