RENT in Theater, 2022 Performance Schedule
“La vie Bohème.” It’s not just a song from RENT that’s become iconic since the musical premiered in 1996, but a lifestyle that people have aspired for ever since. The story of a group of misfits struggling to survive in Manhattan has become monumental in the theater world, as it’s filled with bittersweet lessons of acceptance, hope, failure, and love.
Even if you had seen the 2005 film or watched Rent: Live in 2019, you need to see this musical in the flesh. While it closed on Broadway in 2008 after twelve years, you can still see this gorgeous show in a city near you! In 2022, Rent will be playing in San Antonio, TX, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, Colorado Springs, CO, and more.
Jonathan Larson’s most famous musical focuses on friends struggling to survive in 1989 Manhattan. While each character is starkly different – Mark a struggling musician, Roger a filmmaker, Angel a drag queen, and Mimi a stripper – these characters all have one thing in common: they’re struggling with an HIV diagnosis amid the AIDS crisis.
Their failing health only adds to the pressure of paying rent, advancing careers, and maintaining relationships. We get to watch as these strangers support each other in their most challenging moments, creating their chosen family and belting out the most significant numbers in musical theater history.
“Seasons of Love” is perhaps the most iconic, with the characters encouraging you to live in the moment and never waste any of the 525,600 minutes in a year. There’s also the powerful “Will I?,” the couple’s duet “Light My Candle,” and Idina Menzel’s signature solo “Over the Moon.” Did you know that the Broadway legend originated the role of Maureen long before she was Elphaba from Wicked or Elsa from Frozen? This is just one fact that shows the significance of Rent, even over two decades after its premiere.
Tragically, Rent creator Jonathan Larson was never able to see the show in person, passing away from an undiagnosed heart issue the night before the off-Broadway premiere. Fans have flocked to see Rent in every major city in his honor. It’s a story of resilience and hopes even in its saddest moments and a must-see for any musical theater fan.
Rent may be coming to you in 2022, and you simply have to see the show! Check the dates below and get your tickets now to see this iconic musical.
