Elf The Musical is returning to the stage this holiday season, and it will be more fun and festive than ever in 2023! This year is the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest Christmas films of all time. And now, Buddy the Elf is coming to life and spreading holiday cheer with some never-before-heard, Broadway-style songs.
Will Ferrell’s famous character got a harmonious twist when the Broadway musical premiered all the way back in 2010. And despite leaving New York City (also where the play is set) a few years back, you can still see Elf: The Musical in dozens of locations across the US. In 2023, the show is visiting Canton, OH, Vancouver, BC, Phoenix, AZ, Mountain View, CA, Wilmington, NC, and more! With songs like “Sparklejollytwinklejingley,” “I’ll Believe In You,” and “Nobody Cares About Santa” on the playbill, you’ll be in high spirits from start to finish.
Those who have watched the film beside the fireplace since 2003 know the backstory of Elf The Musical. Santa Clause accidentally brings a human baby named Buddy back home to the North Pole and helps raise him amongst the elves. However, Buddy always knew that there was something different about him. And upon finding out the truth, he makes the trek to New York City to find his real father. Meanwhile, the audience follows his journey of self-discovery, holiday spirit, and more belly laughs than we can count.
While the original film wasn’t a musical, the stage version is adapted so Buddy has quite the set of pipes on him. And you’ll be tempted to sing along! As Ferrell said in the original film, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” And all the actors onstage follow this mantra as they take you on a magically festive journey. Prepare to see Santa read through his “naughty or nice list” on an iPhone as the show makes modern references to Instagram, pop culture, and more.
