The Smashing Pumpkins are visiting your favorite cities on the Rock Invasion 2 tour in spring 2022, and it’s going to be a grand time with the alternative rock icons. See Billy Corgan and co. beginning May 2nd in San Antonio, TX, with shows continuing through the 28th in Columbus, OH.
The Smashing Pumpkins tour was initially meant to occur in 2020, with two postponements before an official cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans were saddened to wait to see the Chicago-based rock group, of course, but longtime supporters knew that it was only a matter of time before they got back on stage. As it turns out, they were absolutely right.
With the 2022 Smashing Pumpkins tour set to begin in just a short couple of months, we can’t wait to see the dreamy set designs, psychedelic rock tunes, and striking theatricality that made them famous. Billy Corgan and his bandmates have astonished audiences since 1988, and Rock Invasion 2 will be a series of shows to remember. Expect to hear classic tracks that you grew up with, like “Today,” “Disarm,” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” and maybe even a few new tunes.
The band released their eleventh album, Cyr, in November 2020, which chases a more synth-pop sound than their trademark brand of 1990s rock. This was an intentional move on Corgan’s part, who aimed to create a record that celebrated past successes while also looking to the present.
“I got sick of making music that people kept telling me didn’t sound contemporary. In my mind, I’m in a contemporary band. I’m a contemporary artist,” Corgan told NME. “Now, the positive thing there is I frame myself as a progressive musician. So I took that on and thought, ‘OK, I’m gonna make contemporary music; I don’t care what it takes.”
“I told the band, ‘this is what we’re gonna do,’ and everybody said, ‘OK fine”, he continued. “I don’t think they really knew what it meant other than, ‘He’s gonna go on about whatever he’s gonna go on about and as long as it’s good, we’re cool with it.’ So that’s what we did.” It’s a blunt statement, in true Billy Corgan fashion, but this technique helped to create one of the group’s best records in years!
