Just like the original Nutcracker, this modern masterpiece by Jennifer Weber follows the journey of Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince. They team up to fight the evil Mouse King, and learn a few essential lessons about love and community as they dance to dreamlike sequences. While Tchaikovsky’s classic score remains mostly untouched, there are definitely a few modern twists to appreciate.
The dancers wear tennis shoes instead of tutus, do less ballet and more breakdancing, and the violinist goes even harder to amplify every twist, turn, and jump. As the kids say, the DJ and violinist “understood the assignment” when accompanying this breathtaking hip-hop choreography.
