Matisyahu is performing in 13 cities in summer 2022, celebrating his seventh and self-titled album released earlier this year. See the Jewish rapper and reggae singer beginning June 2nd in Eagle River, AK, and continuing through Berkeley, CA, on October 23rd.
This album marks Matisyahu’s first since 2017’s Undercurrent and his return to the stage after half a decade. While he likely enjoyed his hiatus, the rapper-turned-reggae singer is an artist in every sense of the word. He hasn’t exactly been relaxing over the past few years, but instead perfecting his latest record for its post-pandemic debut! Matisyahu incorporates the singer’s unique artistry that you’ve come to know and love, featuring hints of hip-hop, reggae, and rock over religious undertones.
In their album review, Riff Magazine states that Matisyahu “tells his perspective of a country that he says has allowed him freedoms and to pursue his dreams, yet allows the harsh realities of injustice and discrimination to thrive around him.” They also state that the album is “filled with depictions of Jewish figures, references to the landscapes of America, and collaborations with Latin musicians that push the album to have a more 2020s sound.” For the record, they’re not wrong.
The artist’s sound and style have shifted dramatically over the years, witnessing every era. We hadn’t seen anybody like Matisyahu when he reached mainstream success back in 2005, donning a hat and long beard during each performance while making headlines as a “Jewish rapper.” His single, “King Without a Crown,” was a Top 40 hit and one of the biggest singles of the year, catalyzing his future success. He’s dabbled in rock, reggae, and beatboxing with every album, and while he continues to be spiritual… he no longer makes religion his identity.
He wrote an essay in 2011 about his musical and spiritual transitions, which have transferred into his music.
